Community Spin - November 2011

Early in November, a two-way cycle track opened in Southwest Portland, just south of downtown.  The SW MOODY AVE. CYCLE TRACK is a new, 0.6 mile elevated roadway from SW River Parkway to SW Gibbs St., near the aerial tram.  Also included are separated sidewalks and three standard vehicle lanes.  Going south, the cycle track ends and you’re back on the standard bike lane.  Going north, there is a bicyclist activated signal to help you cross the street or turn.  At Gibbs St., where the cycle track currently ends, in early spring bicyclists and pedestrians will have access to the car-free Gibbs St. Bridge which will connect to SW Corbett St., SW Barbur Blvd. and the Lair Hill neighborhood.  There is no direct access to these locations now because of the I-5 freeway.  The cycle track is especially welcome because for the last 10 months cyclists have been dealing with the detour, a challenging 2-way bike and pedestrian path on an unimproved sidewalk which was bumpy, uneven, potholed with old streetcar tracks exposed, mixes of paving materials, narrow, curvy sections with blind corners and the path changing from week to week as construction needs changed.  (This was my commute for the last ten months and it was challenging but at least we had a direct detour.  The north-bound section of Moody was closed to vehicles, requiring a lengthy and hilly detour for them.)

9/10 Ride Announcement E-mail

Important message to all Portland Velo Members!

Our Saturday Signature ride this week, Sept 10th, will start at 8am instead of 9am.  This change has been made due to the extreme temperatures forecasted for Saturday afternoon. In the interest of member safety we feel it best that we start a bit earlier so we can finish earlier and before the intense temps arrive.

Our 40 mile route will be familiar to everyone, has one slight climb and for the most part is flat to rolling. The earlier start time coupled with a relatively easy route will allow everyone to finish before noon.

Please be sure and hydrate well over the next couple days and ride with 2 bottles Saturdays.

See everyone “bright ‘n early” Saturday morning.

KRhea
