Saturday Signature Ride May 11th Notice!

PLEASE NOTE: The Hippie Chick Half Marathon will be taking place this coming Saturday starting at the Hillsboro Stadium.  We suggest entering into the LaCie parking lot via the Evergreen entrance rather than the 229th/Bennett entrances as they will most likely be blocked due to runners.

7/28 Ride Notice - Start Venue Change!

Due to the Tour de Cure starting at the Hillsboro Stadium, much of the traffic will be rerouted around our normal start location this week.  To avoid this we will be starting at Century High School at 2000 SW 234th Ave, Hillsboro OR 97123.  Please adjust your plans accordingly!

Change of Venue Announcement

Saturday Signature Ride June 9 Will Start at McMennamins Edgefield

This week Portland Velo presents members a change of scenery with an off-site ride. We will meet at McMenamins Edgefield, 2126 SW Halsey Street,Troutdale OR 97060. Start time remains 9 am. Please follow the entrance road all the way back, and park your car in the far SW corner of the back parking lot.

We’ve ridden from Edgefield on numerous occasions in the past and the rider turnout grows each time. There are many ride options from Edgefield and the two we use are:

Directly out, up, and down to Multnomah Falls and back to Edgefield.  It’s an easy out-and-back with a longish, shallow climb going out followed by a twisting/turning downhill to the Falls. On the way back you have a bit steeper climb up to Crown Point , then a bomber downhill run all the way back to Edgefield.

The “climber” option begins 100 yards past the Women’s Forum State Park, as you take the right fork up the hill instead of the left fork down to Crown Point. From that fork it’s a steady 14-mile climb to the summit of Larch Mountain. If you opt to turn around at the snow gate, you can save yourself the final 4.5 miles of climbing to the summit parking lot.

There will be no official ride leaders this week, however, we will provide maps of the route. These rides are a chance for us to give the ride leaders a break from their duties and allow them to just ride and enjoy themselves. So, grab some members, form your own group(s), and have a great ride!

See you Saturday morning,

KRhea

Happy New Year's, Portland Velo Members!

Here's hoping your holiday season has been a good one so far, and that the coming New Year will bring great things for you and your family.

This is a reminder there will be no Saturday Signature ride this week, as we ring in the New Year with our annual "Portland Velo / Madison's First Ride" on New Year's Day.

Details of the ride:

  • Location: Madison's Grill parking lot, 1109 SE Madison Street, Portland
  • Start time: 10 a.m. Please arrive a bit early, as we'll have some important announcements pre-ride, and will take our annual group photo on Madison's front steps before we ride.
  • Ride style/route: Please leave your Powertaps, Garmins, aero skinsuits, fast wheels/fast bikes, and your burning "need for speed" at home for this ride. Today we ride as a group, celebrating a great end to 2011 and a fun beginning to 2012. There will no designated speed groups, as we do on Saturdays. We simply ask that the fast riders slow down a bit and the slower riders speed up a bit, and we all ride together. We'll meander around Portland and through various neighborhoods for a couple hours. The route usually is decided en route, so arrive with an open mind to something a bit different and fun. There might be a slight hill or two; if need be, we'll do a re-group at the top and then roll on.
  • Post ride festivities: Madison's owner and PV sponsor/member Steve Brown and his crew will provide a post-ride brunch for all members!!!! Steve and I would like to ask all members for a donation of either $5 or two canned goods. We'll donate all proceeds to a local charity.
  • Weather forecast: DRY!!!!!!!

As we depart 2011 and begin our journey into 2012, I thank everyone for being a part of another safe and successful Portland Velo year. The PV Operations team and I appreciate your continued support and enthusiasm for the club, and we hope to see you at even more rides in 2012.

Happy New Year,

KRhea
President/Director, Portland Velo Cycling Club

12/10 RIDE CANCELED!!!

Update: 8:50am - After checking the route and finding addition locations of freezing fog, we've decided to cancel the ride for 12/10.  (Reports are coming in of accidents on 26 at CPR due to slick roads.)  Sorry for the late notice, but this one came in and surprised us as its totally clear in downtown PDX.

Due to slick road conditions currently around our starting location at LaCie in Hillsboro, the ride start time has been pushed back to 10am. We apologize for the late notice, but we just were notified of localized conditions between CPR and the Hillsboro Airport.

Important message to all Portland Velo Members!

Our Saturday Signature ride this week, Sept 10th, will start at 8am instead of 9am.  This change has been made due to the extreme temperatures forecasted for Saturday afternoon. In the interest of member safety we feel it best that we start a bit earlier so we can finish earlier and before the intense temps arrive.

Our 40 mile route will be familiar to everyone, has one slight climb and for the most part is flat to rolling. The earlier start time coupled with a relatively easy route will allow everyone to finish before noon.

Please be sure and hydrate well over the next couple days and ride with 2 bottles Saturdays.

See everyone “bright ‘n early” Saturday morning.

Important Announcements!

This week the club has a couple of important “happenings” to keep in mind.  Please take a moment and read through what’s up so you won’t miss any fun this week

SUMMER CLUB KIT ORDER!

First off, it’s new “kit” order time!!!  I know a lot of you have been patiently awaiting this opportunity so mark your calendars for this coming Friday evening, June 10th, 6-8:30pm at the Castelli offices, 1040 NE 44th Ave #1, PDX 97213.

This is your opportunity to try on the pieces, find the correct size and make decisions about purchasing club gear if you are interested.  Castelli makes great clothing and our club pricing is excellent.  The following items will be available:Short Sleeve Jersey (M + W)

              • Bib/Shorts (M + W)
              • Wind Jacket (Unisex)
              • Wind Vest (Unisex)
              • Lycra Arm Warmers
              • Lycra Knee Warmers
              • Cycling Caps
              • Socks
              • Helmets- This is a full on custom Portland Velo helmet designed to work with our new kit design and colors.

You will not be purchasing/paying for the items at this fit session. The club will open an online “store”, you’ll be notified when the “store” opens at which time you can log on, check out the items again, make your purchase decisions, pay online and in a few weeks our orders will be ready.

Later in the summer or perhaps early fall we’ll do another fit session for winter/cold weather gear.

This will be the only fit session we’ll have for correct sizing prior to ordering so please make every effort to attend.

SATURDAY 6/11 RIDE START LOCATION CHANGE

The next item relates to our Saturday June 11th club ride.  Due to the Helvetia Half Marathon starting and finishing at Hillsboro Stadium we are unable to use our usual start location this week so…We’re gonna go off-site so to speak.  Way off-site to the beautiful Gorge Scenic Hwy.  We’ll be rolling from Mcmenamins Edgefield at our usual start time of 9am and we’ll ride from Edgefield out to Multnomah Falls and back.  This is a very scenic route, approx 40miles give or take a bit with a touch of climbing.

When you arrive Edgefield please park in the designated area for our group (west parking lot, West of the Powerstation Pub).  Just look for myself, JRod or the large group of folks with bikes and you’ll be in the right spot!  Look forward to seeing everyone this week.
