PV Profile: Patrick Gibson

How many years have you been riding?
Somewhere around the age of five I was gifted this bike that had a broken chain. You could link it back together but it would come off every few hundred feet. To this day my two older brothers insist that I had to learn how to ride a bike twice; guess I didn’t catch on the first time, given the equipment at my disposal. If you mean riding, like with Lycra, Lycra and I enjoyed a relationship in college; we went our separate ways but renewed our vows about four years ago.

What brought you to the bike?

Four years ago I sat down and thought, “What do I want to do besides work?” This was actually a tough question, so I made it easier for myself by asking “What did I used to do that I might like to do?” Cycling was always the great leveler. Difficult times are put into perspective, even great times can be seen for what they are.

Members Spotlight - Couples Edition

One of Portland Velo’s most visible couples is the impossibly attractive and bike-skilled Craig and Sue Moerer. They’re a kick to ride with, if you can catch them! Until you do, here is a little background on this Dynamic Duo:

Craig and Sue met in 1981, windsurfing in the Columbia Gorge. They’ve been married 25 years, and have a 22-year-old daughter, Andrea. Responses to the following questions were written by Sue, approved by Craig.

How long have you been riding together?
We both dabbled with biking before our daughter was born, after being introduced to road biking by a fellow windsurfer. Started riding bikes regularly in 2006, after buying some “better” steel bikes at a swap meet. We rode with friends who were fairly serious about biking, which escalated into upgrading to our present bikes and joining Porland Velo.

Race Team Members Spotlight - Couples Edition

The Happy Couple after the 2010 Alpenrose Cross Crusade

Malcolm and Melanie are two of the many couples that race with the Portland Velo team.  Malcolm has been a team member since the 2009 season, and Melanie started in 2010.  Both have been very successful over the years and are wonderful people to be teammates with.  Let's find out a bit more about this dynamic duo!

Since this is a February news letter, lets start with a lovey-dovey question.  How long have the two of you been together!

Melanie: Since 1998, so that's 14 years. We first met in 1997 on Cycle Oregon.  The next summer we met again on a week-long Adventure Cycling ride in Montana and started dating and going back and forth between Springfield, where Malcolm lived, and Portland, where I lived.

How and when did the two of you find Portland Velo?

Malcolm: A few years ago our friends Jeff and Pam went to Mexico on the trip that Doug and Linda, Bruce, Dave and Jude and a few more PV folks had pulled together. When they returned, they kept saying that they thought we'd really like to ride with this group called Portland Velo, so finally one sunny day we showed up for a Saturday ride and have been involved ever since.

Usually I email or approach someone I know to do the member spotlight, but this time I had to think outside the box. Being as Monday is Valentine’s Day, I thought it would be appropriate to have one of our original cycling couples do a member spotlight together. I emailed Art and Lynne Steele, who are on vacation in Hawaii this week but still took the time to write this article for us. Read on to learn about their extensive cycling experience and advice for how couples can enjoy cycling together.

How did you both find Portland Velo, and what has your experience been with the club the past few years?

We were members of the Portland Wheelmen and we liked to ride on the West side, so it was a natural to join Portland Velo. The experience has been very positive; we have met lots of new friends; have always had good group rides--21+ for me and 19-21 for Lynne. We always seem to be the oldest in our group!

Member Spotlight on Sal Bondi – intro by Matt D’Elia

Euro Style!I have to be honest and say I don’t remember the first time I met Sal.  If I was to hedge a bet, it would be at the very first meeting for the race team back in late 2006 or early 2007, but it wouldn’t be until cross season of ’07 that I got to know him. Over the course of a 4 week period, Oregon received some record levels of rain culminating in the “tie the tents down to trucks because the wind is so crazy” weekend at USGP – PIR.  Sal and I bonded over our shared love of seriously dark beer during that stretch and have been friends since.

Sal has been a constant "behind the scene" presence within the team since its inception.  During our first year he was a part of our very first State Champion TTT (Team Time Trial) team.  When we announced we were going to do a 'cross race in `08 he was the first to say “what do you need help with?”, and designed much of the publicity for our promotional material.

During the offseason between 2008 and 2009, he worked with Ty to design both our current kits and the custom paint job on the VeloVie Team Edition 300SE’s.  2009 also saw Sal take a more active role in helping make the PV tents the place to be during cross season, almost single handedly doing setup / teardown every week.  Finally this year, I leaned on Sal heavily, doing a graphical update for our kit, the graphic design on our tents, plus graphics for our new website on top of the coordination work for another successful 'cross season that saw the PV banner fly all over Oregon, and even down to San Francisco!

While the above paragraphs paint a rosy picture of Sal, don’t let that fool you.  Sal can be a demon on a bicycle, and his Sicilian bloodlines will leave you suffering on a climb at the first sign of weakness (even after saying he’d ride with you.. I know this from experience!) .

Truthfully, I wouldn’t want it any other way.  Portland Velo would not be what it is today without his personality, his contributions, his impeccable euro style (see photo), and his completely selfless nature.  There is a reason PV honored him last year with a standing ovation, received over the phone, at our awards ceremony.

Without further ado, I present you this month’s member spotlight, Salvatore Bondi.

Many of you know Reginald for his role as Portland Velo's Membership Liaison.  Reginald also has a long history with cycling, including tandem racing with his wife, Kate! Off the bike, he is busy with his new venture as owner of the Max Muscle Sports Nutrition store in Tualatin, as well as supporting his daughter's competitive figure skating pursuits.   Here are his responses to our questions about his passion for cycling.

How did you find Portland Velo, and what has your experience been with the club the past few years?

I originally became involved with  Portland Velo through Kevin Rhea. I had been a long term Portland Wheelmen member, and Bruce Giunta was club president for at least one of those years. I was looking for a different experience than the one I was getting on Wheelmen rides. Kevin encouraged me to show up for a Saturday ride, and the rest is history. I found the rides to be more serious, with various levels of speed and experience, which was very appealing. That was 2 years ago and I have enjoyed riding with the club ever since.

Member Spotlight on: Javad Simonsen

Javad is one of those people who obviously knows a lot about cycling, and it shows in his riding, but he’s humble about it when you talk to him.  I’ve tried on several occasions to keep up with him on the Thursday SE rides, and it’s just not possible 100% of the time, but Javad knows every single bike path, road, shortcut and bike route in the Portland area.  It’s obvious he has been riding these roads for years.  But there’s a real excitement in his eyes when he talks about mountain bike racing and cyclocross, and it’s evident he loves to ride in the dirt (and get dirty! You know, like the video.)  He’s got a great sense of humor and is always willing to help, even answering some of my dumbest questions, (sometimes without laughing).

[Linda] How long have you been riding?
[Javad] At the risk of aging myself, I've been riding for more than 20 years.  I started way back in high school, converting my old Huffy into something of a touring bike.  I'd go with a buddy for bike tours out past Estacada.  We would leave Friday after school and wouldn't get to the campsite until around 10pm.  Normally we didn't use lights, since we had the old generator-rubbing-on-your-tire lights, although we did have them mounted just in case.  Perhaps it was a bit crazy by today's standards, but no one said I was a "smart" kid!
Several years later while I was stationed in Europe I began road and mountain bike racing, no doubt inspired by Greg Lemond.  I was hooked after that.
